Evil Dead Burn is a horror film written and directed by Sébastien Vaniček. It is the 7th entry in the franchise, if you include the Ash vs. Evil Dead series. It stars Souheila Yacoub as Alice, who is a widow who is trying to make amends with her in-laws following the death of her abusive husband, Will.
We find that Will did not just die but was possessed by a deadite. He then returns after infecting more people and turning them into deadites and harasses the family which decides for some reason to all meet at the old abandoned house they own after the funeral.
There are a list of problems with this entry, but we won’t belabor most of them here. Any fan of the previous 6 entries will be able to identify them on first viewing, so we will just go over ones we had issue with.
This entry tries to lean into the trauma/grief subgenre, but fails to establish any importance. The characters just aren’t really prevalent enough to have any attachment to, and the husband that died was an abuser.
Killing the dog was unnecessary. There really was no reason other than shock value to have that in this film at all.
The link to Evil Dead Rise was unnecessary. I don’t know why they felt the need to do that, but it has no relevance here, and was just stupid.
The CGI was terrible.
The Kandarian Dagger being there didn’t make sense.
Evil Dead Burn is the weakest entry in the franchise by far. This was one of the worst horror films we have seen in years. It didn’t feel like an Evil Dead film. It felt like someone wanted to make an Evil Dead film, but just didn’t get it. They had all of the elements and just shoved them into their shitty script and spit this trash out. Who knows, maybe they threw it all into AI. The writer/director of this film only had one previous feature film under his belt. We actually feel bad for Souheila Yacoub. She did a great job as Alice with what she had to work with.
Overall, we would not recommend anyone watch this garbage. It has no business being an entry in the series. It was like they didn’t understand what an Evil Dead film was supposed to be. Everything about this made it almost seem like they had never even seen one of the previous entries, including the fantastic Evil Dead Rise which this one should not be associated with in any way. We wish we could take the 2 hours back and use it for literally anything else.
